Tried to write a letter; In ink
I've got a piece of paper; But it's Empty
karl marx: religious distress is at the same time the expression of real distress and the protest against real distress. religion is the sign of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of spiritless situation. it is the opium of the people. the abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness.
what marx is saying is that religion create illusory, compensatory fantasies for the poor. economic realities prevent them from finding happiness in this life, but religion tells them it is ok since they will find true happiness in the next life.
people are in distress, he aknowledges, and religion provides them with solace - just as people who are physically injured recieve relief from opiates.
'religion is an analgesic(painkiller)'
taken from the straits time today.
on another note, i have realised what makes great minds great is the fact that they question their believes and biasedness, what they use to base their decisions on.
i have tried this and believe me, it is hard. it would be easier to just brush everything aside and just accept it like what i am doing now. but in order for ones mind to grow i guess constant evaluation is needed
